Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club - A lovely Vaal River Resort

Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club – A lovely Vaal River Resort

Did you know…

  • The Vaal River’s proper name is actually the Vaal River Barrage Reservoir.
  • This river is the largest tributary of the Orange River.
  • The Vaal River forms the border between Gauteng, the Freestate, the North West Province and Mpumalanga.
  • The Vaal River is 1120 kilometers long.
  • The name ‘Vaal’ is an Afrikaans word meaning dull, which alludes to the river’s water, especially during flood season.
  • The original name of Gauteng, Transvaal, was derived from the Vaal River. Transvaal means ‘beyond the Vaal River’.
  • The Vaal River Barrage is owned by Rand Water and the Department of Water Affairs ensures that pristine drinking water is provided from the river to many major Gauteng municipalities.

To help navigation on the river, Rand Water has marked the kilometer readings from the Vaal Barrage Wall at Loch Vaal, counting up to the 50 kilometer uptake at the Lethabo intake.

Where we always had watermelon fights as kids, the modern (and adult) thing to do is to use it in either a delicious sorbet or to make a fancy cocktail to enjoy on the banks of the Vaal River.

RiverBlogger has compiled some watermelon ideas and tips for you for the coming summer holiday:

Cookie + Kate’s Watermelon Juice recipe is ideal for a hot summer’s day on the banks of the Vaal River. Click through here for the recipe: Watermelon Juice

A delicious summer salad would be the Watermelon and Goats’ Cheese Salad, as seen on Sarah B Consulting. Find the recipe here.

Try these recipes for your next Picnic on Vaal at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club.

So what are the dos and don’ts when it comes to writing romantic poems? Have you ever received a poem that started with the following?
“Roses are red, violets are blue…”
Do I need to continue? (Wow, I’m a poet and I don’t even know it!)
