Many of the Riviera on Vaal Resort’s visitors are very fond of the Hotel’s picnic offerings for family getaways and romantic picnic spots, which motivated the RiverBlogger to do some research on how to green your picnic.

With Earth Day on the way, the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club is on a mission to create awareness about the importance of environmental responsibility. How else than to share some tips and ideas on how to green your picnic, one of the many things to do outdoors with families and friends at the Riviera on Vaal while appreciating nature and what it has to offer. Create some additional family fun for your loved ones while visiting the Riviera on Vaal by enjoying a picnic on the banks of the Vaal River.

Some tips on how to green your picnic:

  • Go local. What better place to have a picnic than in your local parks or resorts like the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club?
  • Reuse when you can. Picnics are a great way to use things that are reusable, including utensils, drinking cups, glass food containers (packed very carefully) and blankets.
  • Learn about your surroundings. We tend to forget that nature has so much to offer. This is the ideal opportunity to teach your kids about certain insects or the local trees growing in your area. Bring along some binoculars or a magnifying glass and teach them more about the little things in life.

Cover their lollipops with marzipan shaped earth balls or teach them about recycling by painting the recycle sign on their sandwich with food colouring and get them some reusable or recyclable lunchboxes.

With Easter on the way, it is only natural to think of two things at once. Christ’s resurrection and bunnies.

Many people in other countries see Easter as a salute to spring. However, Easter marks the first days of winter for us here in South Africa. Many South African families spend Easter in appreciation for Christ’s resurrection, making Him their Savior, which resembles new life with a whole new meaning than just spring. Spring, being a sign of re-birth, was the origin of Easter bunnies in the Northern Hemisphere and South Africans have also now adopted the Easter Bunny in addition to their religious celebrations of Christ’s resurrection.

Here are a few Easter Decorations to resemble your celebration of new life, whether it is the actual change of season or for more religious reasons:

Combine a wreath, which resembles a thorn crown worn by Jesus during the crucifixion with eggs which not only resembles the well known Easter Bunny’s eggs, but also new life.

Set the Easter table by folding napkins into bunny ears. See how to do that here: Click through for instructions on how to fold your napkins like bunny ears

You could also add the “written egg” below to the Easter table decorations to assist in explaining the reason for Easter to your children.

As white is a symbol of new life, why not lay your Easter table in white?

These are only a few creative decoration ideas to play around with. Lucky for us, bunnies are a very popular décor item for the home at the moment, so you won’t have much trouble adding them to your Easter decorations this year.

Happy Easter to all of Riviera on Vaal’s clients, friends and family. Enjoy this time with your loved ones and be thankful for new life!

Fondue is another theme you could consider

Fondue is another theme you could consider

When last did you treat your friends to a themed dinner? Perhaps it’s time to dust off those candle holders and cooking pots and pick a theme.

Here are the RiverBlogger’s top 5 themed dinner ideas to assist you in picking the right theme:

  1. Choose your favourite movie and work around that as the theme. An example could be Eat, Pray, Love, which is a movie well known for its divine pastas. Or pick a book or a play that could inspire some more interesting ideas for your themed dinner party. An example could be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In this story an apple plays a very important role. Use apples as your theme and serve apple cider or apple and cinnamon pie.
  2. Pick a historical era as a theme for your dinner. Think Flower Power with tie-dyed placemats and endless music choices. The Victorian Era and the Roman Empire could also inspire some great themed dinner ideas.
  3. Choose a colour and go with it. Colour themes are a very popular and fun way to make a meal unique and interesting. An example could be a Lemon and Lime evening which will result in green and yellow décor features and cocktails to die for!
  4. Go green. With environmental responsibility becoming the norm in our everyday lives, why not share your green ideas with friends and family through an exciting and unique themed dinner? Make a day of it and invite your friends to join you at the farmer’s market or a fresh food market the morning before to buy ingredients for dinner. Use fresh flowers from your own garden to decorate the table. Use cloth napkins and beeswax candles as part of the table decorations and fresh herbs from your own garden as part of the food preparations.
  5. Are you a fan of soup and wine? With autumn and winter dawning upon us, why not start thinking about a soup and wine themed dinner with close friends? Couple the soups with different kinds of breads and hummus and see how your guests enjoy the different textures and flavours.

Looking for a venue for your themed dinner? Have a look at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club‘s different venue options.

Top 5 holiday exercises

Top 5 holiday exercises

According to The Guardian Newspaper the top 5 exercise holidays include the following:

  1. A cycling tour in Laos
  2. Running the Highlands of Scotland
  3. Pilates breaks in Sussex
  4. Walking Spas in the UK
  5. Army boot camp in Mallorca

So which of these exercises will you be able to incorporate into your holiday at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club? All you need to do is to think outside the box:

  • Bring along your cycling gear and have the Hotel staff assist you in planning a safe cycling route in the area. It is after all their responsibility to know the area well enough to be able to refer their guests to relevant local destinations. If you would like to attend an indoor cycling session, visit the Riviera on Vaal’s exercise room on the third floor or have them arrange a Virgin Active voucher for you.
  • Running the “Highlands” in Vereeniging is not a match to the Highlands in Scotland. Still there is the option of going hiking at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve and if you really feel up to it you might just as well run parts of it.
  • Bring along your pilates matt and enjoy pilates sessions on your own in your spacious room at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel. Having a view across the Vaal River will make these pilates sessions much more worth your while.
  • Walking spas might be one of the easier exercises to incorporate into your visit at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club. Play a game of golf at the Riviera on Vaal Country Club and walk beside the Vaal River and then spoil yourself with a relaxing treatment at the onsite Zorgvliet Spa. Easy as pie.
  • If you really feel the need to take part in a boot camping session, book a team building at the Riviera on Vaal Hotel and Country Club and ask Tapimanzi to arrange a boot camp team building session to get the blood (and the creative juices) pumping.
